The Origin

MIM HQ and the Movement is Medicine® methodology began from a profound health journey, where Emma Marshall, the founder, turned pain into empowerment.

Emma's thriving career in the music industry was overshadowed by severe health challenges, including years of medical trauma and misdiagnoses. In 2018, her health took a drastic turn for the worse, and she was seriously ill, but no one could tell her what was wrong.

With conventional treatments not working, this prompted a journey to an integrative hospital in Mexico in search of answers. Despite intensive and experimental treatments, Emma's condition worsened, at times leaving her unable to walk and experiencing seizures. She had problems with her immune system and endocrine system and had several infections she was struggling to fight. Determined to regain her health, she extended her stay in Mexico, exploring, partaking in, and studying alternative indigenous healing modalities as well as a variety of sciences and emerging research into the impact of stress when it comes to our health and wellbeing.

Through her experiences and studies, she discovered the pivotal role of the nervous system in both physical and mental health. She found that music, movement, and rhythm play essential roles in healing and regulating the nervous system and with huge persistence and resilience, she made a full recovery from her traumatic ordeal.

Drawing from this discovery and her experience working in global dance and music culture, she created Movement is Medicine™. Starting with a 30-day Instagram challenge featuring daily playlists to inspire movement, it quickly evolved into a widely adopted stress-release method, endorsed by neuroscientist Dawn Harris. The method has now been taught to thousands of people globally, has instructors in training on a worldwide scale, has been featured on national television and the national press, and has acquired support, partnerships, and elevation from global brands, personalities, and institutions, all featured on the press section of the website.

Today, Emma is currently developing her work into a PhD through public works. MIM HQ and all projects under the umbrella including the Movement is Medicine® method aim to educate and inspire others through Emma's journey, promoting health and empowerment through music, movement, rhythm, and physical expression.
